FUJAIRAH – The Fujairah football club has signed up Diego Maradona as club manager on a one-year contract as the retired professional football player vowed to treat the UAE First Division “like it is the best in the world.”
He told FIFA.com that he will take on the challenge to guide the football club to the Arabian League in the next season.
Prior to his new stint with Fuajairah club, Maradona coached the Dubai-based Al Wasl in the UAE Pro League for the 2011-2012 season.
According to reports, the appointment of the 56-year-old Maradona as Fujairah manager is a surprise considering his superstar status in the sport and the Fujairah football club is in the second tier of UAE football.
“I liked the project and especially the team, who were one point away from being promoted. That means that the spine of the team is a solid one. Now it will be time to work with them and recharge the batteries,” said Maradona.
“I’m not afraid of the challenge. It’s the opposite in fact. I am really excited. I cannot wait to meet the players and see how they train, how they eat, how they hit the ball. It’s a new challenge in a smaller league, although I’ll treat it like it was the best in the world,” he also said. GAC/Expat Media
