Magnitude 5.9 earthquake jolts Türkiye, injuring at least 50 people

A strong earthquake struck Türkiye’s northwestern Duzce province early Wednesday injuring at least 50 people.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Golyaka District on Wednesday at 4.08 a.m. (0108 GMT).

The tremor originated at a depth of 6.81 kilometers (4.2 miles).

The quake was also felt in Istanbul and other provinces, including northwestern Bolu, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Bursa, Bilecik, and western Izmir and Kutahya provinces, as well as the capital Ankara.

Eighteen aftershocks were recorded after the earthquake. Power outages are being implemented in the region as a preventative measure.

Due to the earthquake, Duzce Governor Cevdet Atay has stated that schools will be closed on Wednesday. BKM/ Expat Media
