Members of a gang that kidnapped a couple in Dubai are now in jail after they were sentenced by the Dubai Criminal Court for kidnapping, assault and robbery in Dubai Silicon Oasis.
The court sentenced six gang members and four in absentia to five years in jail, followed by deportation. They were also fined Dh2.6 million.
The court heard that the gang kidnapped an Asian investor and his girlfriend from his villa in Dubai Silicon Oasis. The case dates back to July last year.
The victims, in their testimony, said they were locked up in an apartment as the group forced the investor to transfer 700,000 digital currencies worth Dh2.6 million to the account of one of the group members.
The victim said that seven of the gang members were Asian while three were from eastern Europe. He said that the group held them in an apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers.
He said that after the digital currencies were transferred, two of the gang members escorted them to a car and dropped them off near a man-made lake before fleeing.
Police were able to track down and arrest the gang members. Police seized sums of money in their possession. ICA/Expat Media
