Up to Dh50,000 fine for maltreatment of seniors in UAE

 

DUBAI – The UAE Public Prosecution said that maltreatment of senior citizens in the country is punishable with a jail term and a fine of up to Dh50,000.

Under the UAE Federal Law No. 9 of 2019, those caught maltreating the elderly will be jailed for up to two years and fined between Dh10,000 and Dh50,000.

Insulting seniors is also considered maltreatment. The law also punishes those who witness the abuse of seniors but fail to report the incident.

Senior citizens are Emiratis who are 60 years old or above. Under the law, they are entitled to privacy and protection from violence and abuse.

The law also gives the elderly the right to social care, housing, education, work, medical care and independence. ICA/Expat Media
