Indian expat receives Dh655,341 after losing leg in Ajman road accident

An Indian expat who lost his left leg in a road accident in Ajman has received Dh655,341 in compensation after a legal battle that saw the initial court award increased on appeal.

Sudheer, a 38-year-old father of two from Kerala, was working as a lift technician supervisor when the accident occurred in May 2025. He had been living and working in the UAE for 15 years.

The accident happened while he was travelling with colleagues in a company vehicle to a worksite.

According to his lawyer, Advocate Shamsudeen Karunagappally, the driver lost control and crashed into an elevated pedestrian walkway before hitting an electric pole.

Sudheer’s left leg was severely crushed. He was rushed to NMC Royal Hospital in Jebel Ali, Dubai, where doctors tried to save the limb. However, it was eventually amputated below the knee. The injuries left him unable to continue his job, while his recovery has involved ongoing medical treatment and financial uncertainty for his family.

A compensation claim was filed against the insurance company through Advocate Shamsudeen, a senior legal consultant at Ayesha Aldhaheri Advocates in Dubai.

The legal team initially sought Dh1 million, citing Sudheer’s disability, loss of earning capacity, physical and psychological suffering, and the impact on his wife and two children.

The Dubai Court of First Instance awarded him Dh400,000. His lawyer appealed, and a higher court increased the compensation to Dh600,000. A total of Dh655,341, including court costs, was subsequently received from the insurance company and transferred to Sudheer’s bank account.

However, the legal proceedings are not over. Shamsudeen confirmed that a further appeal had been filed before the Dubai Court of Cassation, seeking additional compensation on the grounds that the amount awarded does not adequately reflect the consequences of the injuries. Sudheer also sustained injuries to his right leg and continues to receive treatment.  ICA/Expat Media
