DUBAI – A Dubai-based Filipino accountant won Dh142,857 after using his last Dh35 to buy a late “last shot” entry to the weekly Mahzooz draw.
Dennis matched five out of six numbers to share the Dh1 million second prize in the latest Mahzooz draw. He was one of two Filipinos and five other expatriates who won a share in the secondary prize.
“That 35 dirhams was the last money I had on my credit card,” the 34-year-old Filipino said.
“I had originally meant to participate in the March 27th draw, but I submitted my entry just a few minutes late and so it rolled over to April 3rd. Thankfully, luck was on my side last Saturday because I didn’t have the money left to participate again. This was my last shot,” he said.
Dennis said his win came at a better time and was the perfect “gift” after a difficult period.
“When I logged into my account and saw my Winning Balance, I had tears in my eyes. I was shocked and happy, but it took a while for the win to sink in,” Dennis said.
“I just got married last year and we have a new-born daughter, but in January I left my job and haven’t found a new one yet. Not having a job right now is difficult and this money is the gift my family needed.”
Dennis plans to use the money to pay off his mortgage in the Philippines.
“What makes me even happier is now I can go home for a while and spend time with my baby. She is my precious lucky charm,” he said.
“This is such a big help for my family and I’ll always be able to look at my house and say ‘Mahzooz gave me this house’,” he said.
The other Filipino who won a Dh142,857 share in the Dh1 million prize is 32-year-old Cris. Other big winners in Mahzooz include Muhammad, 29, from Pakistan; Shehar, 39, from India; James, 30, from Ireland, and two other winners.
Entrants can participate in Mahzooz by registering via www.mahzooz.ae and purchasing Al Emarat bottles of water for Dh35. The next draw will be held on April 10, at 9pm. ICA/Expat Media
