What’s next for new Filipina millionaire in Dubai?

DUBAI – A Filipina expatriate who won Dh1 million in a raffle draw in Dubai said her newly found fortune will not change her employment status anytime soon.

Nina Elmina Sanchez, a 32-year-old hotel receptionist in Dubai, was the grand prize winner of the Al Ansari Exchange raffle draw on January 12.

The Filipina received an entry to the draw after sending less than Dh200 to her father in the Philippines. She sent the money through the outlet in Mirdif City Centre.

In a media interview, Sanchez said she will keep her job as a receptionist and use her winnings to fund her 12-year-old son’s education.

“I have been in the UAE for a year only and the last thing I expected was to be become a millionaire,” Sanchez said.

The Filipina is the seventh person to become a millionaire through the draw. Sanchez has been living modestly in a shared apartment in Dubai with her sister and cousin.

She said she doesn’t want to make “rush decisions” on how to spend her million dirhams, but that she will definitely “spend the money wisely”.

Sanchez doesn’t plan on going on a shopping frenzy either, saying she is intent on using the windfall to help support her family in the Philippines.

She plans on continuing her job at the hotel in Business Bay amid the Covid-19 pandemic to help her properly plan her next moves.

When Al Ansari representatives called her about winning a million dirhams, she initially thought it was a prank. The Filipina said the news of her big win “feels like a dream”. ICA/Expat Media
