DUBAI – A Filipina left jobless during the Covid-19 pandemic got a “Godsend” windfall when she won Dh333,333 after spending the last Dh50 in her wallet.
Remedios Bombon was one of three people who shared the Dh1 million prize in the Emirates Loto draw on May 16.
Bombon, who lives in a shared villa in Baniyas, Abu Dhabi, said she lost her job after the school where she worked as a housekeeping attendant closed during the pandemic.
The Filipina said it was the most difficult period of her 10-year stay in the UAE. “How can I pay for my room and buy my food?” she said.
Bombon was down on her luck, with no job and a paralysed husband and their three children to support in the Philippines. On top of that, she also recently lost her mother.
With the last Dh50 in her wallet, Bombon decided to take a gamble.
“I had Dh50 dirhams. This is the last money. I will try,” she said as she bought an Emirates Loto entry.
“All the numbers [I choose] is my birthday and my kids’ birthday. I told God only four numbers is enough for me,” Bombon recalled.
Had she matched only four out of six winning numbers, she would have won Dh300.
As luck would have it, she did not only match four, but five out of six winning numbers! This meant she won the second prize of Dh1 million. After sharing the prize with two other winners, she takes home Dh333,333.
A very happy and grateful Bombon said she will use her winnings to build her own house and start afresh with her own business. “I’ll help my sister, my brother and relatives,” she added.
Last weekend, two more Filipinos won the second prize in Emirates Loto, sharing the Dh1 million prize with six other winners.

Emirates Loto is the UAE’s first fatwa-approved “collectibles scheme”, with weekly draws held every Saturday. To win the jackpot, entrants need to match all six drawn numbers.
The Emirates Loto jackpot is fixed at a minimum of Dh35 million for each draw. If there is no winner, then the jackpot will increase by Dh5 million each week until there is a winner or the jackpot reaches Dh50 million. Currently, the jackpot stands at Dh50 million.
In case of two or more winners, the jackpot will be divided among the winners. ICA/Expat Media
