Etihad Rail Abu Dhabi to Dubai train: residents await launch date

DUBAI – Residents are eagerly awaiting the start of passenger services between Abu Dhabi and Dubai on the Etihad Rail.

The national railway project took the spotlight at the ongoing Middle East Rail conference at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.

“Everyone is really looking forward to shorter travel time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” Tawfiq Ibrahim said, echoing sentiments of travelers in the UAE.

“It will be interesting to see the progression of the proposed future rail projects across the GCC,” said Jack Kirby.

Although a launch date has yet to be announced, train tracks between the two emirates had been linked up in March.

The train is expected to cut travel time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi by 50 minutes at a speed of 200km per hour, while travel between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah will only take 100 minutes.

Dubai and Fujairah commute will take 50 minutes, and travel between Abu Dhabi and Al Ruwais will take 70 minutes.

The railway passenger services, which will run from Al Sila to Fujairah, would improve travel in the UAE by connecting 11 sites and cities across the country.

Ahmed Al Hashemi, Executive Director of Passenger Services at Etihad Rail, told media the train is expected to boost passenger travel on public transport and reduce traffic accidents.

Etihad Rail’s wider network runs across 1,200 kilometres from the border of Saudi Arabia to Oman. In the UAE, it is expected to transport more than 36 million people each year by 2030. ICA/Expat Media
