Award-winning Filipino actor and filmmaker Epy Quizon is set to visit Dubai later this month as his acclaimed directorial debut, Bukal (Wellspring), competes in multiple categories at the Emirates Film Festival.
Quizon has been nominated for Best Director, while Bukal is in the running for Best Short Film, Best Foreign Film, Best Ensemble Cast, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup.
He is scheduled to attend a press conference in Dubai on July 24, ahead of the film’s official festival screening on July 25. The festival will conclude with its gala awards night on July 26.
Festival organisers said Quizon is expected to discuss the film’s central message of compassion, peace and reconciliation, as well as plans to expand Bukal into a full-length international feature film.
He is also expected to introduce the UAE market to the next-generation community platform Fliquey and the Banayad Whisky brand during the visit.
Released in 2021, Bukal marked Quizon’s debut as a film director. Set in Mindanao, the short film explores themes of healing, unity and understanding by telling the story of soldiers and members of a Muslim community who overcome conflict and discover hope through cooperation and compassion.
Since its release, Bukal has built an impressive international reputation, collecting more than 140 awards and festival laurels around the world. Among its honours are Best Drama Short and Best First Time Director at the Los Angeles Indie Short Fest, along with numerous awards from international film festivals across Asia, Europe and North America.
