Dubai villa burglars jailed over Dh1.3 million theft

DUBAI – A gang of villa burglars has been jailed for stealing Dh1.3 million in cash from a villa in Dubai’s Al Barsha area.

The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced the gang of five men and a woman to three years in jail for the burglary that happened on New Year’s Eve. Two of the gang members were sentenced in absentia.

The court also ordered them to pay a fine of Dh1.3 million. The convicts will be deported after serving their jail term.

According to court records, the villa’s Egyptian owner came home at around 4am to find that his property had been ransacked. The cash he kept in two suitcases were missing from his bedroom drawer.

The thieves also stole money in different currencies and watches worth nearly Dh60,000.

Police were able to track down one of the gang members, a 58-year-old man who told police about the identities of the people involved in the villa burglary.

A police officer said the man served as lookout and driver of the getaway car. Police said three of the burglars were Chinese nationals who arrived in the UAE on visit visa. ICA/Expat Media
