Traveling on the Dubai Metro Red Line is going to be a lot quicker starting April 15 when passengers will no longer need to switch trains at the Jebel Ali station.

The Jebel Ali Metro station serves as an interchange station on the Red Line. Currently, passengers from Ibn Battuta station or further will need to get off at the Jebel Ali Metro Station and take another train to reach their destination.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), new direct routes will be implemented starting April 15, eliminating the need to switch to a different train at the Jebel Ali Metro Station.

This will be made possible with the Red Line operating a Y junction or three railways. The move is expected to benefit commuters travelling from Ibn Battuta station, or those heading to The Gardens, Al Furjan or Expo 2020.

“Passengers would no longer need to interchange or swap at Jebal Ali metro station.. and can conveniently board a train directly to their destination,” said Hassan Al Mutawa, RTA Director of Rail Operation.

How it works

From April 15, trains will operate alternately, with one direct train ride to Expo 2020 and another direct train ride to UAE Exchange station. The new system, seving as a Y junction, will ensure a “seamless journey from Centrepoint directly to UAE Exchange Station and Expo 2020 Station without the hassle of switching trains at Jebel Ali Station,” RTA noted.

The new system is expected to reduce crowds and waiting times at Dubai Metro stations. ICA/Expat Media
