Dubai: Man jailed, fined Dh275,000 for stealing, illegally selling gold

The Dubai Criminal Court imposed a three-month prison term and a Dh275,000 fine on an Asian man for breach of trust.

The man was given four gold biscuits worth Dh250,000 along with Dh25,000 in cash by a friend who had to send it to a company in his country.

The accused was supposed to give it to a different man back in their home country in exchange for money, but he allegedly stole the gold.

Upon meeting the person he was initially supposed to transact with, the accused claimed he had already given the gold to someone else before leaving the country.

The victim called the police after becoming aware of what had occurred. Then, as soon as he entered the nation, they detained the suspect.

The victim said to police that he had bought the bars of gold to send to his business partner in his home country to sell it. When he was looking for a way to send it across, one of his friends said he would return for vacation and told him that he could take the gold. The man then trusted the accused with the gold and gave the bars to him.

The victim claimed that after contacting his business partner back home, the accused informed him that the gold had been sold before he left the UAE.

The accused admitted to his crimes during the questioning. BKM/ Expat Media
