Dubai expat and family drown while on Oman holiday

A Dubai expatriate and his family drowned while they were on holiday in Oman, according to authorities on Thursday (July 14).

The incident happened near the Mughsail Beach in Oman’s Dhofar governorate on Sunday. According to Oman Civil Defence rescuers, the family was swept away by strong waves.

Rescuers were able to retrieve the bodies of Shashikant Mhamane and his son, Shreyas, in the Al Mahaseel area. Authorities are still searching for three missing family members.

According to police, Mhamane was with his wife and their children for an Oman holiday on Sunday when the incident happened.

The couple’s children were reportedly playing near the rough sea and were swept away by a strong wave. The father tried to rescue the children but drowned along with them.

Police said the family hailed from Maharashtra in India. Mhamane was an employee for a private company in Dubai.

Authorities said that unstable weather has been reported in parts of Oman in thepast few days, with as many as 16 people drowning in valleys and the sea between July 7 and 12.

Police have urged the public to follow safety warnings during unstable weather and to exercise extreme caution when passing through flooded valleys and areas. ICA/Expat Media
