An Asian cleaner in Dubai has been jailed for stealing a Bluetooth headset and a storage device with digital currency worth $5,000 from a diner at a restaurant in Jumeirah.

The Dubai Court of Appeal upheld a verdict sentencing the cleaner to three months in jail, followed by deportation, plus a fine of Dh990 for his crime.

The case dates back to February last year when an Arab man reported to police that his personal belongings were missing after he left his table at the restaurant to wash his hands.

CCTV footage from the restaurant revealed that the cleaner had taken the man’s belongings from his table.

During interrogation, the cleaner said he kept the Bluetooth and did not tell the manager about it because he wanted to use it. However, he denied stealing the storage device. ICA/Expat Media
