Dubai authorities to crack down on illegal e-scooter use

DUBAI – Starting on Monday (October 26), e-scooter riders will be allowed to use or rent them in five trial areas across Dubai, with police to stop riders outside these zones.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the e-scooter rental project will be rolled out in Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, Dubai Internet City, Jumeirah Lakes Towers and Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard.

October 26 update: E-scooters now available for rent in Dubai

Starting on Monday, five companies will be allowed to offer rental services in the five areas. Riders can rent e-scooters from Arnab, Skurrt, Careem, Lime and Tier.

E-scooter owners will also be permitted to use them in these designated zones, but run the risk of being stopped by police in other areas. E-scooters must not be used on pedestrian pavements. Helmets must be worn at all times.

In 2019, Dubai banned rentals of e-scooters following safety concerns.

“E-scooters are currently not permitted anywhere in Dubai. Although you can see some people using them, police are enforcing the law as much as possible in order to safeguard people’s lives,” said Hussain Al Banna, executive director of traffic at RTA, ahead of the trial run.

The RTA plans to allow e-scooter use on the city’s bicycle tracks and in Dubai Metro stations, but this depends on the outcome of the e-scooter trial this week. ICA/Expat Media
