The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) stated it would investigate complaints of Filipinos recruited as scammers abroad.
Hans Leo Cacdac, DMW Undersecretary, claimed Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople ordered support for OFWs involved in the illegal recruitment.
“Secretary Toots has ordered, for example, providing airport, accommodation, legal, financial, and psychosocial counseling assistance to the OFWs mentioned in Senator Risa’s speech,” he said.
In her privilege speech on Monday, Hontiveros bared the case of 12 OFWs rescued from a Chinese syndicate based in Myanmar through the help of a non-government organization and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
According to Hontiveros, the Chinese mafia lured the OFWs to Myanmar to defraud others and use cryptocurrencies as a cover.
Cacdac said the DMW is coordinating with the DFA and other authorities to help the OFWs.
“Don’t worry; rest assured, the DMW is closely monitoring the situation of the OFWs that Senator Hontiveros was referring to,” he said. BKM/ Expat Media
