DUBAI – A British woman has been jailed for spitting at a Dubai Police officer during an incident at Palm Jumeirah.
The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the woman, 38, to six months in jail followed by deportation.
Her 34-year-old Iraqi companion, who threatened to have the officer fired from his job, was also sentenced to six months in jail and will be deported after serving his jail term.
The British woman and her Iraqi companion have appealed the ruling.
The court heard that the incident happened at around 3:30am on June 12 after the police offer responded to a report of a “disturbance” in the couple’s Palm Jumeirah residence.
The Filipino building watchman had called police after residents complained of loud music coming from the couple’s apartment.
“I asked them repeatedly to lower the music volume but they just ignored me,” he said.
The watchman testified that when police knocked on the door, the British woman started yelling at them.
One of the police officers testified that the woman “insulted me using foul language and spat on my face”.
Her Iraqi friend also threatened the police officer that he would “get me fired and that he worked for VVIPs.” Investigation showed that the Iraqi man has a criminal record.
The policemen said they didn’t provoke the British woman or her Iraqi companion. They were both drunk at the time of the incident, police said. ICA/Expat Media
