A British tourist lost his appeal and is now in jail for insulting a staff member at the Dubai International Airport.
The Briton was initially fined Dh10,000 for verbal abuse following the February 2022 incident. He appealed the sentence at the Dubai Court of Appeal, which has revised the verdict to three months in jail instead of a fine.
According to records, the Briton was transiting through Dubai Airport with his mother and had “acted aggressively” at staff over a wheelchair for his mother.
An airport employee who witnessed the incident testified in court that the Briton used offensive language, in front of other people.
“I saw the traveller repeatedly asking an airport desk employee about the wheelchair and expected that he might have not understood her explanation,” the employee told the court. “When I tried to explain it to him, he insulted me using very bad language.”
The airport desk employee, in her testimony, said she was on duty in the transit area of Terminal 2 when the Briton approached her to inquire about their flight schedule. She told him that their flight was departing from Terminal 3 and that they would need to take a shuttle bus to get there.
She said that the Briton then asked for a wheelchair for his mother, and that she told him that a wheelchair would be made available before they boarded the bus. The Briton left, but returned in a short while to insist on a wheelchair, claiming that a passenger near the bus had a wheelchair. This was when he started saying offensive language at the employee who intervened in the exchange.
Following the incident, Dubai Police was notified and a case was filed against the British traveler. Following this month’s ruling at the Dubai Court of Appeals, he will be deported after serving his jail term. ICA/Expat Media
