Big Ticket: Filipino, Turkish, Indian expats in UAE win 24-karat gold bars

A Filipino expat in Abu Dhabi, a Turkish man in Dubai and Indian expats in Dubai and Sharjah have won 24-karat gold bars in the Big Ticket daily e-draws, according to Big Ticket on Wednesday (November 22).

Armando De Castro, a 46-year-old Filipino car technician in Abu Dhabi, said it was his first time to purchase a winning ticket from Abu Dhabi’s new airport.

“I went to Big Ticket’s new counters at Abu Dhabi’s new airport. It’s the first time for me to purchase a ticket from there, and it turned out to be a lucky place,” said De Castro, who has been purchasing Big Ticket for the last two years with his friend.

What does he plan to do with the gold bar? “We will sell the gold, and with the cash portion, I will invest with my brother to start a small business back home. The rest I will use to pay the fee for my immigration to Canada,” he said.

Turkish expat Taner Topcu also brought home a gold bar. The 47-year-old from Turkey, who has been residing in Dubai since 2003 and working for the government authority, created his account with Big Ticket five years ago. Since then, he has been making purchases every alternate month with his best friend.

“I am very happy for my win. We didn’t expect to win the gold. When I received the email about my winning from Big Ticket, I didn’t believe it until I saw my name on the Big Ticket website,” Topcu said.

Two Indian expats also won a gold bar. Ajay Kumar, a 50-year-old expat in Dubai, said he felt lucky when buying the ticket and won with a special offer.

“I purchase Big Ticket whenever I feel I am lucky. This month, I received a call from Big Ticket, and they offered me a special offer. I took that as a sign from God that I should purchase, and I won,” said Kumar, who has been buying Big Ticket in the last four years.

When asked what he planned to do with his prize, the accountant said: “I will not sell the gold; I will keep it.”

Meanwhile, Sharjah expat Rahul Karthikappallil said he was “shocked and happy” to learn that he won a glittering prize in Big Ticket. The 40-year-old expat works as a supervisor in a company.

“I remember when I purchased Big Ticket, I was on a video call with my family who lives in India, and I asked them to select the ticket numbers for me. They did, and I won,” he said. He has no plans of selling the gold now.

Throughout November, anyone who purchases tickets for the upcoming live draw will have the chance to walk away with a guaranteed Dh15 million on December 3. Big Ticket customers will also be automatically entered into a daily electronic draw on the day after their purchase, giving one lucky customer a chance to win a 24-karat gold bar every day.
