Arabian Ranches murder: death sentence upheld for killer

The UAE’s biggest murder case in recent years closed on Thursday (June 15) with the highest court in Dubai giving the final verdict to uphold a death sentence for a construction worker who murdered an Indian couple in Arabian Ranches.

The case dates back to June 17, 2020 when the 26-year-old Pakistani man stabbed to death the couple Hiren Adhiya, 48, and Vidhi Adhiya, 40, in their villa at Arabian Ranches.

The Dubai Court of First Instance found the Pakistani worker guilty of the premeditated murder of the Adhiyas, the attempted murder of their daughter, as well as theft of Dh1,965. The Pakistani convict appealed the death sentence and the case was moved to the Dubai Court of Appeal, which also upheld the verdict. The convict made a final appeal and the case was heard at the Dubai Court of Cassation, which upheld the verdict on Thursday (June 15). The verdict is final and can no longer be appealed.

Arabian Ranches murder: chilling details revealed

On the night of the murder, the convict hid outside the villa for six hours before sneaking in through an unlocked patio door after the lights were switched off. He took Dh1,965 from the wallet on the ground floor and went upstairs to search for more. He was familiar with the villa as he had carried out maintenance work there in December 2019.

He entered the sleeping couple’s bedroom to open the bedside drawer, which woke up Hiren, whom he stabbed to death. He also attacked Hiren’s wife and stabbed her to death.

Forensic reports revealed that Hiren was stabbed 10 times in the head, left shoulder, chest, and abdomen. Vidhi was stabbed 14 times in the head, neck, chest, face, ear, and right arm. The powerful stabs penetrated their blanket that wrapped the couple in their sleep.

The convict then encountered the couple’s elder daughter, 18 at the time, after fleeing the couple’s bedroom and stabbed her in the neck. The wounded daughter and her sister, then 13, witnessed their parents being attacked before the elder daughter called the police and her father’s friend.

The knife used in the heinous crime was found 500 meters from the villa. The bloody handprint on the villa’s wall and a bloodied mask on the victims’ bed were found to have matched the suspect’s DNA.

The Pakistani attacker was arrested in Sharjah a few days after the gruesome murders. During police questioning, he admitted to the charges of the premeditated murder of the couple, the attempted murder of their daughter, and theft.

He explained that he was desperate for money after his mother allegedly fell ill in Pakistan just three days before the murders. However, during his court appearance in November 2020, he changed his plea and claimed he was innocent.

In February 2021, both the daughters and their father’s friend testified in court. The elder daughter recounted how she heard cries for help from her parents’ bedroom at around 1:30am and used her mobile flashlight to check.

She ran into the Pakistani attacker at the door of her parents’ room and was stabbed by him. She was able to kick him before he fled the house.

“I entered their room, where they were lying on the ground, drenched in blood, and I tried to talk to them, but there was no response from them. My sister also came to the room and I locked the door, after that I reported the incident to the police via my father’s phone,” the girl testified. She also called her father’s friend.

The man said that the elder daughter called him around 2am. She was said to be screaming hysterically while saying that “her mother was dead, her father was still moving, and she was stabbed too.” He said that when he arrived at the villa with his wife, they saw police and ambulance in the place and knew that something horrible had happened.
