DUBAI – Two popular sports events in the UAE have been cancelled in the last 48 hours due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In Dubai, the Dubai Rugby Sevens 2020 has been cancelled, tournament organizers announced on Sunday (October 11).
The announcement came after UAE authorities prohibited competitions until further notice.
“We were incredibly close to making this happen, but ultimately we have fallen at the last hurdle,” said Thomas Burwell, the tournament director of the Sevens, adding that his team attempted a plan to make the event, scheduled for December 4-5, work despite restrictions.
“I am very proud of the work that the team produced, we have left no stone unturned, but following further discussions with stakeholders at all levels the decision has been taken to cancel the tournament for 2020,” Burwell added.
In Abu Dhabi, the Adnoc Abu Dhabi Marathon has been postponed over the coronavirus pandemic.
The marathon, scheduled for December 11, has now been postponed to December 2021 to ensure the safety of runners and everyone involved in the event.
Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said implementing safety standards and precautionary measures was their utmost priority.
“This is based on the instructions of the competent government agencies emphasising great attention to the safety and health of everyone,” Al Awani said. ICA/Expat Media
