DUBAI – Police have arrested 16 suspects and seized Dh278 million worth of illegal drugs in the largest drug bust in the UAE.
No further details were revealed about the suspects. Police said that the drug haul weighed a total of 365kg and included 268kg of heroin, 9.6kg of crystal meth and 1kg of hashish.
The drug trade was busted after the General Department of Anti-Narcotics of Dubai Police received a tip off about a drug-trafficking gang operating in the country.
A team called DXB24 was immediately formed to uncover the identity of the suspects and track them down. Police also identified other suspects based abroad.
After investigation, the police team tracked down three gang members in the UAE who were caught under surveillance trafficking a bag of illegal drugs.
During interrogation, the suspects revealed to investigators their secret stash of illegal drugs. The drugs were kept in secret storage rooms spread across the country.
Other illegal drugs were hidden in vehicle spare parts supplied by a car workshop in the UAE that operated as a cover-up to the illegal drug trade.
