DUBAI – What is the truth behind a viral video purportedly showing a banana infested with worms in the UAE? The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority has issued a statement.
The authority clarified that the video clip showed Helicobacter, a type of bacteria, and not worms, on the Somali banana.
“Worms are not known to complete their life cycle inside fruits when it is as big as shown in the video,” according to the authority.
Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hammadi, Director of Communication and Community Service Department at the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, also said that the UAE authority has a strict monitoring policy on the health and safety of food products, including fruits and vegetables, in the local market.
