DUBAI – Pasig City’s young new mayor, Vico Sotto, has shut down a processing plant that reportedly belongs to restaurant chain Razons of Guagua over health and safety violations.

Razons of Guagua has multiple franchise restaurants in the Philippines and one in Karama, Dubai.

In a video, Sotto and his team were seen inspecting the factory where they discovered an open sewage that illegally dumped waste straight to the Pasig River.

“And you wonder why our river is so dirty?” Sotto said in Filipino.

When confronted by the mayor, one of the workers said the establishment has been allowed to operate in this condition since 2007.

Sotto said he is aware that a government official regularly inspects the premises. “Do you give a bribe?” Sotto asked the worker, who denied knowledge of the issue.

The mayor reminded workers that illegal dumping of sewage waste clogs drainage systems, causes flooding and ultimately pollutes the river.

“Baka ‘di n’yo na realize buhay ng tao ang nakasalalay dito. Hindi ‘to pera pera lang (Maybe you don’t realize that people’s lives are at stake here. This isn’t just about money),” he said. ICA/Expat Media
