Filipino fisherman Roland Abante wows America’s Got Talent

Filipino fisherman and motorbike delivery driver Roland Abante passed his America’s Got Talent audition with a performance that set the crowd and judges on their feet for a standing ovation.

“This fisherman’s voice is an absolute surprise! Roland Abante traveled from the Philippines to share his talent with the world. Watch as he delivers the perfect cover of ‘When a Man Loves a Woman’ by Michael Bolton,” America’s Got Talent wrote on its YouTube page. Watch the video here:

Abante got four “yes” votes from all judges in the 18th season of America’s Got Talent to compete for the ultimate $1 million prize. “Everybody just heard a life changing moment,” judge Howie Mandel told the Filipino.

“Why America’s Got Talent?” judge Heidi Klum asked Abante, who turned his back momentarily to hide tears. He then tells her, “This is my big dream to be here.” He would later have the chance to hug Simon Cowell, his “favourite judge”, offstage after his performance.

“I don’t think you could have done it better. Mic drop. You were amazing,” Klum said after Abante’s performance.

Abante gained social media fame in the Philippines with early video clips of him belting to power songs. He was also featured in the popular Wish Bus. “I sing in the neighbourhood where they have karaoke,” he shared.

The Filipino said he earns a living by fishing during the morning and driving a motorbike to deliver passengers and goods in the afternoon.

“I have a feeling you need to stop fishing. This is where you need to be,” superstar Sofia Vergara said. ICA/Expat Media
