Journalist, child fatally shot near a homicide scene

A TV news reporter and a nine-year-old girl were shot and killed on Wednesday evening (February 22) near the scene where a murder happened.

In a recent news conference, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said that two Spectrum News 13 journalists were covering the murder of a woman who was shot inside a car when the suspect returned and began shooting. One journalist was fatally shot.

The attack did not stop when the gunman, Keith Moses, went into a nearby home and shot the 9-year-old girl and her mother. The mother was in critical condition.

Deputies arrested the suspect not long after the attack, who had a handgun that detectives believe was used in the shooting.

Sheriff Mina expounded the criminal history of the suspect, which includes gun charges, aggravated battery and assault with a deadly weapon, burglary, and grand theft charges.

He described the suspect as an “acquaintance” of the woman shot inside the car but had no connection to the reporters, mother, and child.

Mina also added that it was also possible that the suspect mistook the journalists for police.

Charter Communications, the company that owns the TV station, released a statement claiming the incident as “a terrible tragedy for the Orlando community.”

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and other lives senselessly taken today,” the company expressed.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), at least 67 journalists and media workers were killed in 2022, the highest number since 2018 and an almost 50 percent increase from 2021. RZSP/Expat Media
