UAE-based Filipino rock band Techpenz recently launched a music video of their single “Malaya, Mapayapang Mundo” (Free, Peaceful World) ahead of the Philippines’ 126th Independence Day on June 12.

Formed in 2016, the band is composed of vocalist Andy Abis; guitarists Bogs Rodriguez and Lon Casenas, who also plays the keyboard; bassist Raymond De Cadiz and drummer Norman Fernando.

Speaking to Expat Media, the band members said that although they have various full-time jobs in the emirate, they still find time to share their “common, deep passion in music.” Their latest music video, shot in the deserts of the UAE, is directed and edited by Francis Arambula and produced by Techpenz and One Motion Events Filming.

“We are hoping that through our song can create even a small impact and inspire Filipinos and all other listeners in encouraging and promoting peace,” Casenas, who wrote the lyrics, told Expat Media. Here’s our Q&A:

How is Techpenz different from other UAE-based bands?

Bogs Rodriguez: We are a classic rock band formed in 2016 with band members who also work in the oil and gas, construction, architecture and travel industries. We are a three-time Battle of the Bands champion in the UAE. We also represented the Philippines in the Fujairah International Arts Festival in 2018. We were 2nd runner up in Dubai Dubai Musikahan in 2017, a song writing competition organized by the Philippine Consulate Dubai.

What made you release Malaya, Mapayapang Mundo?

Andy Abis: Our band’s vision, apart from showcasing our talent in music, is to spread the message regarding the importance of unity and being together, with a common aim to have a violence-free and peaceful world. This song was also released as we commemorate the 126th Philippines Independence Day that will be celebrated on June 12.

What was the inspiration behind the song?

Lon Casenas: Violence, human rights abuses and intimidation are common issues everywhere in the world. These elements inspired me to write the lyrics of this song and we are hoping that through our song can create even a small impact and inspire Filipinos and all other listeners in encouraging and promoting peace, as well as freedom from harm and opportunists in our society.

What challenges did you face while making this song?

Norman Fernando: I guess the challenge was getting all the band members availability to be together as all of us are busy with our day jobs, however, in the end, because of our passion and love for music, we were able to finish and record the song succesfully.

What is next for Techpenz?

Lon Casenas: We are planning to post our latest song in Spotify in future, along with the rest of our other original songs. ICA/Expat Media
