A fake Dh200,000 lottery win turned into an Dh84,000 loss for a man in Sharjah after scammers allegedly persuaded him to hand over his banking information and one-time password.
The Sharjah Misdemeanours Court sentenced two men to six months in prison each and ordered their deportation from the UAE. The sentences were issued in absentia, according to court records.
The case began when the victim received a phone call telling him that he had won Dh200,000. The callers allegedly claimed to represent a government entity and told the man that he needed to complete certain procedures before the supposed prize could be released.
They then requested his personal identification and banking details. The victim was also persuaded to provide a one-time password, or OTP, linked to his bank account.
Believing he was completing legitimate requirements to receive the prize, he complied. Instead of receiving Dh200,000, however, he discovered that Dh84,000 had been debited from his account, according to the case records.
The incident was reported to the authorities and the matter was referred to the Sharjah Misdemeanours Court. Prosecutors accused the defendants of using fraudulent methods to obtain the victim’s banking information and access his funds. ICA/Expat Media
