Tips & Three-cks: 3 tips on how to stay motivated

Motivation comes and goes with no regard for deadlines and ambitions. With comfort in arm’s reach, a phone in hand, and a feed to scroll, it’s easy to lose track of time and waste away another second of your life.

While other guides tell you specific steps towards motivation, most of them can be boiled down into 3 easy tips.

Reward system

Have you heard of the Pomodoro technique? This time management technique employs a timer to divide work into 25-minute intervals interrupted by short breaks. Although the strategy is not exactly for everyone, its basic premise is to reward yourself occasionally to clear your head and stay consistent. Rewards motivate you to finish a task and allow you to look forward and push through a deadline. Without anything positive to expect, the mind perceives it as a burden without payoff.

As such, treat yourself to a little snack from time to time. Take a power nap when tasks turn out a bit too stressful. Take any measures to relieve yourself and trick your mind into accomplishing life little by little.

Active Environment

When you’re always alone without anybody’s input, you find yourself doing activities exclusively in your comfort zone. You’re tired, unmotivated, unaccomplished, and gradually, you conclude that your life is dreadful and uneventful.

However, when you find yourself surrounded by motivated and active people, you unintentionally absorb their energy. There are good reasons why most tips tell you to get out and walk for a few minutes or talk to someone when you feel lazy. Previous research, such as the Rat Park experiment, has shown us how society influences us into doing activities.

With that in mind, socialize with people who inspire and motivate you. Follow their example or collaborate towards an ambition. Allow your environment to keep you in check and avoid your mind from consuming you in negative thoughts.

While this tip is the more obvious one, it’s crucial to remember that you alone can dictate your final decisions. You can reward yourself with delicious dishes and beverages or surround yourself with the most industrious billionaires and still face a slump.

How do you maintain optimism? Document your overall progress. Convince yourself to become better. Set goals that give you purpose or make you happy.

These tips, while very simple in concept, encompass everything that you need to be motivated. BKM/ Expat Media
