GUATEMALA – A teenager was shot while he was playing Pokemon Go and later died of his wounds, police said, describing what could be the first death of someone playing Pokemon Go.
Police are now looking for the suspects in the shooting of Jerson Lopez de Leon, 18, in Guatemala City.
De Leon was playing the game with his cousin, Daniel Moises Picen, 17, and where searching for Pokemon characters alongside a railway line when they were shot by unidentified assailants in a van.
Police found almost 20 bullet casings at the scene of the murder. They are looking for a possible motive for the crime.
De Leon’s mother, Rosalinda, told The Independent that the teen had left the house to go out and play the game.
“I don’t know why my son left the house,” she said. “He was already in bed when his cousin sent him a message asking him to go out and download a game a few blocks from the house.”
