Smart Dubai car number plates to send police alert in case of emergency

DUBAI – Next month, Dubai will be the first city in the world to use smart car number plates that will alert authorities in case the driver is involved in an accident.

The new technology will be tested using the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Tag2Connect platform.

Cars fitted with smart number plates will be able to transmit an alert to the police or emergency centres in case of accidents or emergencies, the RTA said on Monday.

The smart plates are actually digital screens equipped with GPS, transmitters and a microprocessor chip.

The number plate will be linked to a driver’s traffic file and e-purse, which will also allow motorists to register their car online, pay fines or fees, or apply for vehicle testing.

Dubai authorities will also use data from the smart car plates to study motorists’ behaviour and to improve traffic issues.

“This feature will help us study road behaviour of a driver, track the vehicle’s movement as well as helping the driver to conduct seamless transaction with different authorities. Also among the benefits is that the system will send out automatic alerts to authorities concerned in case of an emergency,” said Sultan Al Marzouqi, Director of Licensing, RTA.

The test run for using the smart number plates will continue until the end of the year to fix any glitches in the system.

The RTA will also finalise the price of the smart number plates and how to roll it out in the market.
