Sharjah is expanding its smart transport network beyond roads and tunnels, with artificial intelligence, on-demand buses and digital services being introduced to make daily journeys safer and more convenient.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) is developing a transport system that combines road infrastructure with technology designed to monitor vehicles, improve passenger safety and reduce waiting times.

One of the initiatives involves installing smart cameras on intercity buses. A total of 131 intercity buses are being equipped with 10 cameras each, including four external cameras and six inside the bus.

The system is designed to monitor road conditions and the vehicle’s surroundings, detect signs of driver fatigue or inattention, monitor passenger boarding and exit, and record accidents or unusual incidents.

Similar technology is being used in taxis, with cameras monitoring road conditions, driver behaviour, passenger numbers and incidents such as accidents or belongings left behind. Artificial intelligence can also alert drivers to detected incidents, helping operators respond more quickly.

Sharjah buses you can request

Sharjah is also expanding its Bus on Demand service, allowing passengers to request rides through the Bus on Demand Sharjah app by selecting their pick-up and destination points.

The service was initially launched in Muwaileh Commercial and Aljada in 2025, with SRTA later announcing its expansion as part of efforts to improve smart mobility.

Passengers can request a ride rather than relying solely on fixed bus routes. The service supports ride-sharing, allows advance bookings and is designed to accommodate people of determination.

The original service launched with a fare of Dh8 per passenger, with a Dh6 discount for each additional passenger in the same booking, for up to seven passengers.

The approach is particularly useful in densely populated areas and locations where conventional bus routes may not provide sufficient coverage.

A more digital journey in Sharjah

SRTA is also using digital technology before passengers even board. Screens at bus stops provide real-time arrival information linked to vehicle tracking systems, allowing passengers to see when their bus is expected and potentially reducing time spent waiting.

Taxi bookings can also be made through the SRTA app and Sharjah Digital, as well as platforms including Yango, Uber and Careem. Passengers can track their vehicle, see the driver’s location and estimated arrival time, and rate the service.

The technology push comes alongside Sharjah’s wider road development programme, including the Dh750 million package of projects aimed at improving connectivity with Dubai. ICA/Expat Media
