Sharjah son who killed mother receives pardon

SHARJAH – The family of a woman who was murdered by her own son in Sharjah has pardoned the 29-year-old Emirati.

The Sharjah Sharia Court on Wednesday (November 23) reserved its verdict into the case until December 19 after the victim’s family pardoned the Emirati, identified as N.M.E.L.

In a letter to the court, the family said it was giving pardon to N.M.E.L., whom they said suffers from a mental illness.

The Emirati had admitted killing his mother in an apartment in Sharjah’s Al Mamzar area in June, 2015.

The 50-year-old woman was found with her throat slit and her tongue cut out.

In court, her son said that he killed his mother—a Danish national of Lebanese origin—because she was practicing withcraft, and that angels had told him to kill her.

He told prosecutors that he covered her mouth as she slept and killed her and that he had no regrets about his action.

He continued to stay in the apartment with her decomposing body, a prosecutor told the court. A medical report from Al Amal hospital confirmed that the Emirati is mentally ill.

The murder was discovered after the Emirati was reported to police for threatening people with a knife at a supermarket counter where he refused to pay for the groceries he bought.

When police arrested him, he did not have identity documents, so he led them to the apartment where police smelled a foul odour and shortly discovered the woman’s decomposing body.
