DUBAI – Ahead of the UAE’s and the Pope’s call to make May 14 a day for prayer, Cebuano singing sensation Sakdap took to the internet to sing a prayer for the world amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Filipino singing sensations, Cebu’s first acclaimed quartets, sang the popular Gospel song “I Believe”.
In a statement to Expatmedia.net, Sakdap said they wanted to bring positivity and hope to everyone during the pandemic.
The multi-awarded group is composed of Henry Jabonero, Gani Villarojo, Irving Guazon and Josil Mariño.
The vocal ensemble has bagged prestigious awards in music, including the 65th Cebu City Charter Day Award, the 1997 Perlas Award for Contribution to Cebuano Music, and the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award by Vispop.
“Hard times never last. We need to keep the faith. Let’s just believe that tomorrow will be better than today. Prayer is the key,” Mariño told Expatmedia.net.
Sakdap’s Jabonero, who visited Dubai last year, said the group believes “a miracle will happen” and that despite the pandemic, “the goodness of people” will shine.
The lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic had opened virtual doors for Sakdap, taking their jam sessions online for the first time since the group was launched in the ‘80s. They are hoping the platform will help expand their fan base.
For decades, Sakdap has been instrumental to promoting Cebuano music to mainstream media in the Philippines and globally.
Now, more singers from Cebu have made it big in the Philippine music scene, including Morissette, who held a sold-out concert at the Dubai World Trade Center in 2018.
“We’ve been around for nearly 30 years. We never left music. We may have focused on our own individual endeavours but if music calls, we are more than willing to share our talent,” said Sakdap’s Villarojo.
What’s next for the quartet? “Maybe an online concert,” said Sakdap’s Guazon. JMYDS/Expat Media
