Reserved seats for stars draw laughs in Dubai

DUBAI – “Ange, we’re about to start,” Ryan Navarro, 36, quipped while looking at the reserved seat for Angelina Jolie next to him at Reel Cinemas in Dubai Mall.

Obviously, Ange was a no-show at the premiere of Disney film Mulan during the weekend, but the experience was unforgettable for Navarro and other cinemagoers.

“It was fun. A lot of people took photos,” Navarro, a business support executive, told, recalling people’s fun reaction on seeing their Hollywood seatmates-to-be.

Instead of placing the usual signage to impose physical distancing at the cinema, Reel Cinemas thought they’d make people chuckle by reserving seats for stars like Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone.

“I think it was very creative and really matched the occasion,” Navarro noted. “Two seats available, then two seats empty. That was the seating interval,” he said, adding that it “felt safe” because everyone wore masks and seating distance was imposed.

The Dubai-based Filipino said it was his first time to watch a movie in the cinema since February and that he was quite happy with the experience.

“It was an awesome feeling eating popcorn and nachos back in the cinema. It’s definitely a big upgrade from watching Netflix at home,” he said.

He is thinking of going back for another movie and will look forward to sitting next to another Hollywood name.

“I just hope this would not make people too relaxed because the Covid-19 situation is a serious issue,” he reminded. PIA/Expat Media
