Pilots sleeping during flight overshoots runway upon landing

The pilot and co-pilot of an Ethiopian Airlines jet dozed off during a regular flight and overshot the runway upon landing.

The incident happened during a routine flight from Khartoum, Sudan, to Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. The plane was in autopilot mode at the time.

The Boeing 737 cruised at 37,000 feet and had to descend for landing, but it missed the point of descent and continued to cruise instead.

After they failed to descend, the air traffic tried to get in touch with them, but the pilots were unresponsive.

Only after the plane shot past the destination airport did the aircraft’s autopilot system get disengaged, and the alarm went off, waking up the crew.

The pilots realized what had happened, took control of the aircraft, proceeded to descend, and successfully made a safe landing.
