Philippines seizes P160m of smuggled cigarettes in shipment declared as ‘personal effects’

Two shipping containers with cigarettes worth P160 million (Dh10.8 million) have been seized in Misamis Oriental, according to the Philippine Bureau of Customs in Cagayan de Oro.

The smuggled shipments were intercepted after a spot check of a container terminal port in Misamis Oriental on January 18. The shipments, from China, arrived last December.

Customs officials said the illegal shipment contained New Berlin cigarettes in 2,000 master cases. The consignees declared the shipment as “personal effects.”

District Collector Alexandra Yap-Lumontad has ordered an investigation into the matter. The smuggled cigarettes were seized as part of the investigation. ICA/Expat Media
