Philippine former senator Laila De Lima was cleared of all drug charges on Monday (June 24) in a ruling by the Muntinlupa City Reginal Trial Court.

The same court granted her bail November 2023, saying there was no sufficient evidence, and set her free after almost seven years in detention.

On Monday, Judge Gener Gito cleared De Lima of the third and last charge of conspiracy to commit drug trading. The charges were filed against her by former president Rodrigo Duterte.

Gito granted De Lima’s demurrer to evidence, which allowed the defense not to present their own evidence on basis that the prosecution’s presentation of evidence is week. It has the effect of a motion for outright dismissal. ICA/Expat Media
