Motorist in road rage video loses gun licence

The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Monday (August 28) that it has revoked the gun permits of a motorist involved in a confrontation with a bicycle rider in Quezon City.

Brigadier General Benjamin Silo Jr., director of the PNP-Civil Security Group, said it revoked the motorist’s firearm registration, licence to own and possess a firearm, and permit to carry firearms outside residence.

“As a reminder to all licensed citizens, it is of utmost importance to be responsible gun owners at all times. The possession and ownership of firearms are not absolute rights but rather a privilege,” said Silo.

A viral video of the August 8 incident showed the driver of a red sedan threatening a bicycle rider with a gun near Welcome Rotunda in Quezon City. Authorities identified the driver as Wilfredo Gonzales, a former policeman.

PNP public information office chief Brigadier General Redrico Maranan said that based on their records, Gonzales owns three pistols. Maranan said that Gonzalez will be asked to surrender the guns to the Firearms Explosives Office or it will be seized by the police.

Gonzalez has said that the issue with the bicycle rider has been settled at a police station on the day of the incident, and alleged that social media perpetuated a “twisted story” about it. He did not give further details about what led to the assault, but said there was a “long chase” when the cyclist tried to escape.

Meanwhile, the PNP has deemed Gonzales’ threat with a gun as grounds to revoke his gun privileges. “Let this incident serve as a clear reminder that owning a firearm is a privilege that demands adherence to the law and the highest ethical standards. We urge all gun owners to reflect on their responsibilities and ensure that their actions consistently reflect the values of respect, accountability, and security,” PNP chief General Benjamin Acorda Jr. said in a separate statement.
