DUBAI – While more than 125,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) affected by the pandemic received $200 (Dh730) in cash aid from the Philippine government, another program is also ongoing to provide them cash assistance of P30,000 (Dh2,308).
Under the DOLE-AKAP program, a total of 125,112 OFWs received financial and food assistance under the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as of April 23, according to DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III.
However, there is also another program where OFWs displaced by the pandemic can get education assistance for their children or dependents, and this is called the Tabang OFW programme, Bello said.
Tabang OFW is a P30,000 educational assistance for children of OFWs affected by Covid-19. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has allocated P1 bilion for this program that more than 30,000 students are expected to benefit.
Under the scholarship project, OFWS who lost their jobs, have been repatriated or have died due to the Covid-19 pandemic can receive a cash grant of P30,000 for college or university fees of their dependents.
Dependents of OFWs are their unmarried children under the age of 30, sibling or niece under the age of 30. Dependents must be Filipino citizens currently enrolled in a CHED-approved undergraduate post-secondary program. They must also not be a recipient of any other government scholarship.
