‘There was no way they could find me in that fog’, says man stranded in UAE desert

DUBAI – Lost in the middle of the desert, with dense fog shrouding their way, an Indian family based in Umm Al Quwain could only imagine the worst.

Jose George was driving the car with his wife and daughter on their way home when they missed the exit towards Umm Al Quwain due to heavy fog at midnight last week.

“The visibility was under 10m. It was pitch black. There were no street lights. And at one point I realised that I’d gone off the road,” George told Khaleej Times.

Realising that they were lost, George stopped the car on the hard shoulder close to exit 96 on the highway. With his family in the car with him, he was overcome with worry.

“I didn’t want to take any risks,” he said, adding that he thought against calling any of his friends for help “because there was no way they could find me in that fog”.

He dialled 999 instead, but luckily a police patrol car drove past them so he flagged it down.

The policeman asked him to follow him, but George lost trail after a few minutes. Luckily, another patrol car drove past them and George followed it until they reached the main road again.

The policeman who first guided them was waiting on the highway, and led them back to the entrance to Umm Al Quwain.

George said that had it not been for the police’s help, the family would have waited on that deserted area until morning.
