DUBAI – Dubai has opened the first AI-powered Carrefour store in the UAE and the region, allowing customers to shop without having to pay cash or queue at the cash counter.
The futuristic Carrefour City+ opened at Mall of Emirates on Monday. Shoppers can use an app on their phone to shop at the AI-operated convenience store.
Every item that a customer picks up will be automatically added to a digital shopping basket. Purchases can be done without having to interact with staff.
What makes this possible? An app linked to your payment card, plus 97 cameras in the store that track every product and every motion.
“You tap to go in, put your mobile in your pocket, just pick whatever you want to and simply walk out,” explained Nalla Karunanithy, chief digital officer at Majid Al Futtaim Retail.
There are more than 1,300 items, including beverages, packaged food and meals, snacks and essential items at Carrefour City+.
– Open MAF Carrefour UAE app
– Click on ‘City+’ under ‘More’
– Register or Log in
– Select payment card or enter new one
– Click on ‘Access’ to get QR code and enter the store
– Pick items to automatically add them to your virtual basket or return them to remove from virtual basket
– Exit from gate to complete your shopping
– Your card will be automatically charged. A digital receipt will be available on the app
