MANILA – Rabiya Mateo of Iloilo City was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2020 at Baguio Country Club. The finals aired on Sunday (October 25).
Rabiya, 24, was crowned by Gazini Ganados, who placed in the Top 20 of the Miss Universe pageant last year.

1st runner-up: Maria Ysabella “Bella” Ysmael, Parañaque
2nd runner-up: Michele Gumabao, Quezon City
3rd runner-up: Pauline Amelinckx, Bohol
4th runner-up: Kimberly “Billie” Hakenson, Cavite
Rabiya, whose name means “princess” or “queen”, towers at 170cm in height. She hails from Balasan, Iloilo.
The Filipina graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Iloilo Doctors College. She works as a lecturer and review coordinator at SRG Manila Review Center.
During her crowning as Miss Iloilo Universe 2020 before winning Miss Universe Philippines, she said she wants to “show to the world that I am a queen today because of my province and with that being said, I want to prove to everyone that I am a true Ilongga with a heartfelt beauty.”
At the Miss Universe Philippines 2020 question and answer portion, she said she can create a positive and lasting impact on the world around her with her passion for educating people.
“First of all, I need to stick to my core, which is being passionate about educating people. I am a lecturer and I’ve been pursuing this because this education had helped me to have that comfortable life that I and my family deserves and I wanna push people, I want them to achieve greater things in life through me and I know that Miss Universe anything is possible because I am a phenomenal woman with a heart,” she said.
Rabiya is also a big fan of Miriam Defensor-Santiago, raising tribute to the late senator in her Q&A by saying she would pick Defensor as the face of a new Philippine paper currency.
“For those who don’t know, she was an Ilongga, but what I admire about her is that she used her knowledge, her voice to serve the country, and I want to be somebody like her, somebody who puts her heart, her passion into action, and after all, she is the best president that we never had,” she answered.
The first thing she wants to do after winning the Miss Universe Philippines crown? “Have a full body massage. I know my whole body is gonna hurt because of wearing those heels for hours so I feel I deserve that Swedish massage,” Rabiya said at a media interview. CAM/Expat Media
