SINGAPORE – In the first court sentencing of its kind in Singapore, a Malaysian man was given the death sentence through a Zoom video call.
It is one of just two known cases where a capital punishment verdict was delivered through a remote hearing.
A court in Singapore gave the capital punishment to Punithan Genasan, 37, for his role in a drug deal in 2011.
In its verdict on Friday, the court ordered that Genasan be hanged for masterminding the drug deal.
Genasan’s lawyer, Peter Fernando, said the convict did not object to the judgment delivered via Zoom, but that he is considering an appeal.
A spokesperson for Singapore’s Supreme Court said the hearing was conducted via video conference due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Earlier this month, a court in Nigeria meted out a death sentence verdict through a remote hearing in the first of its kind court sentencing in the world.
In the UAE, courts have resumed hearings virtually. Dubai Courts resumed hearings from April 19 for all court levels.
The public can attend the sessions through video-conference for hearings at Dubai Casssation Court, Dubai Appeal Court and Dubai Court of First Instance.
Judges, court clerks, lawyers and case parties can attend the virtual hearings between 8:30am to 10am as part of measures against the spread of Covid-19.
In Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department announced in April that the Abu Dhabi Court of First Instance had reinforced its remote litigation system through audio-visual technology, to include all civil, personal status, rental, urgent lawsuits, and inheritance circuits.
In Sharjah, all judicial hearings related to rental and settlement disputes are beeing carried out remotely starting on May 8.
Parties are able to attend the remote judicial hearing by meeting the judges through a video communication system provided by the authorities. ICA/Expat Media
