MAF sets up facility in Dubai for Carrefour supermarket chain, logistics center will be at NIP; MAF eyes Carrefour branches in other countries

DUBAI – Major retailer Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) has announced the establishment of a logistics facility at the National Industries Park in Dubai to serve as distribution center for its Carrefour supermarket chain.

The facility will measure an immense 800,000 square feet, according to Miguel Povedano, executive regional director of Carrefour UAE.

Povedano said: “We continue to look at the Middle East and North Africa as one of the key growth regions for Carrefour and one that we will continue to invest in over the coming years.”

Povedano revealed that the UAE will be the operations hub of MAF as it planed to expand Carrefour to other countries after setting up branches in Kenya and Kazakhstan last year.

MAF said in a statement that the Dubai facility will have a multi-temperature storage for produce, meat and dry foods as well as serve as a warehouse for non-edible items.

It will also have a storage capacity of 400 million units to meet more than 150,000 orders each day for both in-store and online sales.

Younis Al Mulla, MAF retail senior vice president for developmental and government affairs, said the Dubai facility is environment-friendly and will enable the company to save over 50 percent on energy used per cubic meter “through efficient energy usage thereby reducing the carbon footprint of our stores”.

The company also said since the facility is located at the NIP, which is between Jebel Ali Port and Al Maktoum airport, MAF will be able to cut on transportation time of its goods.
