Life in jail for Dubai worker who strangled colleague over ‘bewitched wife’

DUBAI – A 22-year-old Indian man will be serving life in jail after prosecutors won their appeal for a tougher sentence against him for strangling his colleague.

The man, who worked as a construction worker in Dubai, had paid his colleague Dh350 to cure his wife, who he thought was bewitched.

He claimed that his wife fell ill and tried to burn herself in a suicide attempt and that his colleague had said that he could cure her with a magical powder.

Failing to see improvements in his wife, the worker got into several arguments with his colleague. In January, 2016, he strangled him with a turban at their accommodation in Al Ghusais.

“We fought, but I had no intention to kill him. I was under severe emotional pressure due to what had happened to my wife. I was not in a normal state of mind… we fought and I beat him and I stole his money,” the Indian man told the court.

He was sentenced to 15 years in jail for premeditated murder in March and was also given additional three months in jail for stealing Dh200 from the victim.

He appealed the judgement to seek for a lenient sentence, while prosecutors also sought a tougher punishment.

On Sunday (October 8), the court rejected the Indian man’s appeal and increased his jail term to life in prison. The judge also upheld the Indian man’s three-month jail term for theft.
