A Kuwait court has convicted the killer of Jullebee Ranara, an overseas Filipino worker whose charred remains were found in a desert. The victim’s family expressed dismay over “lesser” penalties imposed on the murderer.
The court sentenced 17-year-old Turki Ayed Al-Azmi to 15 years in jail for murder and one year in jail for driving without a license, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday (September 15).
“The lesser penalties were due to the accused being a minor,” according to the DFA. Al-Azmi has 30 days to appeal the judgement.
Ranara was raped, murdered and then burnt by Al-Azmi, her employer’s son. Her body was found in a desert on January 21. An autopsy later revealed that the 35-year-old Filipina was pregnant at the time of her death.
After news of the court’s judgement, Ranara’s family expressed dismay over the length of imprisonment handed down by a Kuwaiti court to the killer.
“The justice (my daughter) received is not enough,” Norylnda Cabiles, Ranara’s mother, said in Filipino in an interview on CNN Philippines’ The Source.
Cabiles and Jullebee’s brother, Mark Reyes, said they expected at least a life sentence for Al-Azmi for what he did to Ranara.
“Fifteen years? That seems too little because she lost her life and what was done to her was too much,” Reyes said in Filipino. Ranara is survived by her four children. ICA/Expat Media
