James Bond actor Sean Connery dies at 90


BRITAIN – Sean Connery, best known for his role as James Bond, has died, his family said. He was 90.

The Scottish actor died peacefully in his sleep while in the Bahamas, his son Jason said. Connery celebrated his 90th birthday in August.

Connery has been “unwell for some time”, his son said, adding that his father “had many of his family who could be in the Bahamas around him” when he died overnight in Nassau.

Jason said: “We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time.

“A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor.”

Connery was best known for his portrayal of James Bond. He was the first to bring the role as to the big screen. He played the 007 agent in seven films and was voted best actor to have ever done the role.

The actor, from Fountainbridge in Edinburgh, first played James Bond in Dr. No in 1962.

Connery’s acting career spanned five decades. He won an Oscar, two Baftas and three Golden Globes. In 1988, he won an Oscar for his role in The Untouchables.

His other films included The Rock, Last Crusade, Highlander and Indiana Jones.

He was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000. In 2006, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. In 2012, he also received the Cecil B DeMille award for his work in cinema. CCP/Expat Media
