Italy: Woman mummifies mother’s body to collect pension

An Italian woman has mummified her mother’s body and hid it in their apartment so that she could continue to collection pension, authorities revealed.

The macabre scene was discovered by forensic experts who arrived at the apartment in the Paderno Dugnano area of Italy’s city of Milan. The case was uncovered after neighbours informed police that they had not seen the elderly woman for a long time.

The body of the 90-year-old woman was found wrapped in plastic food wrapping when forensic experts searched the apartment. It is believed that her 64-year-old daughter hid the body.

A medical record confirmed that the elderly woman died of natural causes.

According to neighbours, the woman’s daughter told them that she moved her mother to a nursing home in Verona, east of Milan. However, there was no record of the woman’s name in the facility.

The woman reportedly has no source of income and was relying on pension that she received in their joint bank account. ICA/Expat Media
